Winter Term 2009

Class 4/5 : Mrs. K. Harrison and Mrs. M. Smith

Our PE day for this term remains a Monday but there are odd times when I can fit in an extra session or we have external coaches, such as Hull FC who come to teach a session, so PLEASE CAN PE KIT STAY IN SCHOOL ALL WEEK. If you haven't already provided a warm outdoor kit, please can you do so, as well as some outdoor trainers, just in case.

Our topics for this term are 'Colour' and then 'Bears' after the half term break. I will be asking your child to bring in their favourite bear after half term and we can talk about why their bear is special to them. We will also look at old fashioned teddy bears as well as modern ones (if you or your parents have an older bear that we can look at, please can you bring in?!)

This half term our topic of colour will be centred around the 'Elmer' the elephant stories - look out for our colourful classroom wall display! We will also talk about the seasons; how the colour of the seasons changes. We will start this week by talking about one of my all time favourite stories of 'The Snowman' by Raymond Briggs. If you have any 'Snowman' resources that I could borrow I would be very grateful (I already have book, CD and DVD).

In week 2 we are having a Design Technology/literacy week in school centred around the recent film 'Cars'. Again if you have anything we can borrow (if only for the day) I would be very grateful. If you have any empty boxes (cereal or Pringle type ones) please could you bring them in as most of the school will be making their own junk modeled car this week.

I will be monitoring every child very closely this short term, hopeful that they are all making good progress with their f1ashcards (letter, word and number). If you feel your child knows all of the letter sounds, a way forward would be to talk about the name of the letter. You could even muddle up individual letters to make words - even if they don't make sense, just to get your child used to sounding out letters and then blending them to make a whole word. When I feel we are progressing well with this, I will re-introduce reading books
