Board Games |

Board games used to be very popular. TV was only shown between 6pm and 9pm and children were never allowed to watch. The whole family used to sit down together and play a game. Some games are very very old.

Petteia
This game was played by ancient Greeks. They are playing the game on this picture of a vase. The case is 6,000 years old. The game is a bit like Draughts. |

Dice Games
This picture shows two Romans playing a dice game around 2000 years ago in Pompeii. Roman dice were called tesserae. These dice were found at Herculaneum. |

Plus and Minus
In Plus and Minus players had to move their wooden men to the top of the board by drawing cards from a box. It was a very easy game but really fun to play. The P and M motto claimed that You'll play PM to AM. |

Touring Europe
Players start from London, and must race to reach their eight secret destinations. They then had to return to London before their competitors. This game is from 1940. |

Tri-Tactics
Players had to command their army, air force and navy against the enemy.
In 1940 Britain was really at war. |

Buccaneer
This was a game of pirates. The winner was the one who could collect the most treasure. If you were unlucky your ship might sink in a storm and you would have to start again. The picture shows a 1950 version. |

Monopoly is was first played around 1950 and is still popular. This picture shows the original 1950's game with wooden houses and hotels. The playing pieces were made of metal. |

Careers
Careers was first played in 1957. Players must choose an job and then earn as much money as they can to win. This game was very similar to Monopoly but never as popular. |

Car-Capers
Car-Capers was a little like a jigsaw, but you had to win your pieces by rolling the dice. Very few families could afford a car so games like Car-Capers were very popular in the 1960s. |
