Choosing the Best School

School performance

The Achievement and Attainment Tables provide information on the achievements of pupils in schools and colleges, and how they compare with other schools in their local area and in England as a whole. The Tables provide an invaluable store of easily accessible information to parents and the wider community on how well a school or college is doing.

To obtain a complete picture of a school's performance, the Tables should be read in conjunction with other documents such as school prospectuses, governor's annual reports, Ofsted reports, etc.

Primary School Tables show results of Key Stage 2 tests, and a Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 value added measures for all maintained primary schools in England. Printed copies of the Tables can be ordered on 0800 24 23 22

Ofsted inspection reports

The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) is a Government department, set up on 1 September 1992, whose main aim is to help improve the quality and standards of education and childcare.

Ofsted's principal role is the management of the system of school inspection. They provide for the regular inspection of all 24,000 schools in England, which are wholly or mainly state-funded. Copies of the report are sent to schools and a summary of the report must be sent to the parents whose children attend the school. They must also make a full copy available on request.
